Abstract:Although oral health is known as a complementary and necessary element of general body health, it is a fact that the individuals often do not care enough for their oral health. For this purpose, a questionnaire study is performed to see the reasons behind individuals' point of view on oral health and the reasons for inadequate oral care in terms of demography, locus of control, oral care habits, knowledge level, intellectuality and self-recriminiativity. A valid and reliable MDHLOC scale is used to determine the oral health-related locus of control of individuals. In this study, 161 female and 227 male; total of 388 volunteers whose average age is 36.97 are participated. Most of the participants (58.51%) has an educational level of university degree or higher degrees, and with internal locus of control (70.88%) individuals. The data collected with questionnaire were analyzed using the SPSS 20 program. The ratio of being informed about oral care is 67.27% and the source of information is found as dentists with the ratio of 74.71%. It is also found that the participants' knowledge level is higher, as the periodontal disease-bacterial relation knowledge ratio is 74.48%, periodontal-systemic health relation knowledge ratio is 60.82%, periodontal disease -brush relation knowledge ratio is 88.4%, and interdental brush importance knowledge ratio is 78.87%. Even though it can be inferred that participants seems to hava a high level of knowledge, in oral care behavioral analysis, the frequency of brushing teeth two times a day is %52,84 while the frequency of regular interdental cleaning ratio is %22,68 and regular dentist visit habit frequency is %30,67 through participants, and these ratios are inferenced as low. The most important reasons of individuals' negligence of oral care was forgetfulness (%39,43) and hassle (%29,12). There is no intellectual difference between educated and non-educated groups about oral health. In consideration of these informations, the classical oral hygiene education methods that used by dentist, are inadequate even for the higher educated and internal locus of controlled individuals' who can easily manipulated positively. Also these education methods' need to be reevaluated in order to gain the ability to change the individuals' oral care behaviors psychologically, and the need of new researches in the area of oral hygiene education techniques, is deduced.
