Abstract:In this thesis, aluminum based zinc reinforced metallic foams were porduced by powder metallurgy route and effect of process parameters an foaming was investigated. In order to produce metallic foam, Al powders were mixed with 10-15-20 % of Zn powders and 1.25% of TiH2 powders as foaming agent. The mixture was compacted at room temperature under 45 MPa pressure and then was compacted at 350ºC temperature under 400 MPa pressure to produce foamable precursor. The compacts were foamed at 690, 710 and 730ºC foaming temperatures and for 5, 7,5 and 10 minutes in class tubes. It was found that increasing the foaming temperature an foaming duration resulted in an increase in pore size and the amount of porosity whereas resulted in a decrease in density. Compression test was conducted on the foamed samples as a mechanicaal test and it was found that the sample with a large pore size and high linear expansion ratio showed lower compression strength.
