Abstract:The purpose of this study is to determine the perceptions of 5th grade students regarding April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day Celebrations through their written expressions and pictures. The study was prepared by using a phenomenology design within the qualitative research model. The study group was selected with the purposive sampling method and it consists of 77 fifth grade students studying in village schools in central district of Giresun Province during the 2019-2020 academic year. Two different data collection tools including written expressions and pictures of 5th grade students regarding April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day Celebrations were used to collect the data. The pilot study was carried out with 10 fifth grade students studying in Yağmurca Secondary School in central district of Giresun Province during the 2018-2019 academic year to determine the validity and reliability of the data collection tool. Content analysis technique was used in the analysis of the data. Written expressions and pictures were evaluated separately while analyzing the data. In this context, the opinions of 5th grade students in their written expressions were analyzed under 8 conceptual categories in total. These categories are as following; “the celebration style of April 23, feelings about April 23, April 23 viii demonstrations/activities, the purpose/reason of the celebration of April 23, the historical significance of April 23, April 23 expectations, April 23 competitions and problems encountered on April 23”. It was determined that the opinions of 5th grade students in their written expressions mostly gathered on the categories of “the celebration style of April 23” and “feelings about April 23”. On the other hand, the pictures of 5th grade students were analyzed under 5 conceptual categories in total. These categories are as following; “April 23 demonstrations, April 23 competitions, April 23 slogans/decorations, World Children’s Day and Independence War”. It was determined that the pictures of 5th grade students regarding April 23 mostly gathered on the category of “April 23 demonstrations”. Besides, it was determined that a total of 38 students drew pictures that support the opinions in their written expressions. The overall result of this study reveals that 5th grade students perceive the April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day as “Children's Day” rather than the “National Sovereignty Day” and they also perceive April 23 as a festival that Atatürk has gifted to children and they find the demonstrations and activities as part of the celebrations positive.
