Abstract:

This study aimes to determine the collection of the flute quartet repertoire from the Baroque Era to the end of the 20th century and to reveal the features of these works in order to be used in music education. The question of this study is What are the compositions for the flute quartet and features of these works?" In relation to this question, four other sub-questions are answered. The universe of the study was the pieces only composed for the flute quartets from the Baroque Era to the end of 20th century. The sources have been scanned to obtain the entire collection of the flute quartet repertoire. The qualitative and quantitative mixed model was used in this research in order to determine the entire flute quartet works and to analyze selected works of the composers. In the quantitative dimension of the study, a screening has been conducted to determine the number of the pieces composed for the flute quartet. As a result, 70 composers and their 92 pieces for the flute quartet were identified. Sixty-five biographies of the composers and notation of the 37 pieces of works were collected and presented. The 37 works obtained in the qualitative aspect of the research were analyzed in general and the difficulty ratings were determined by using the structured interview technique by presenting to two flute instructors and a chamber music instructor. Experts were asked to determine the level of viii pieces with the structured interview form that was created by the researcher. The results obtained were included in the overall analysis of each piece. As a result, these pieces can be beneficial to both the performers who are in search of quality repertoire and to the instructors who are looking for material to utilize in the study of the flute quartet.
