Abstract:Pimpinella anisum L. is being used by the public for long years by brewing as tea with purposes of relieving the intestinal gas and facilitating digestion. In modern medicine however, other pharmacological effects have been discovered in addition to the effects above, and it is considered that making use of these new effects could be possible in the future years. Some of these new effects include the anticonvulsant effect, anti-inflammatory effects, antioxidants effect, and antimicrobial effect. Several pharmacopeia analyses were performed on the samples obtained from Aegean Agricultural Research Institute and on those purchased from an herbalist including gross and microscopic examinations, foreign material analysis, thin layer chromatography, loss of water with drying, and assays for water and volatile oil contents. As a result of these analyses, it was concluded that neither of the samples were suitable for Pharmacopeia because of reasons like low levels of volatile oils or number of stains in the sample purchased from the herbalist being greater than that of the reference in the TLC analysis.
