Abstract:

Boron ores and their compounds are important raw materials of today's modern industries and barium borate is a special boron product which can be produced by using different barium and different refined boron products. Due to the anti-corrosive properties of barium borate, it is used in paints, glazing of ceramics, due to its optical properties it is widely used in optical glass and laser applications when it is produced as single crystal. With this study, it is aimed to produce barium borate, which is a high value-added product, by using boron ores, which are 73% of the world reserves in our country and barium sulphate, which is the main compound of the barite ore found again in high amounts in our country. Barium sulphate was firstly melted in various proportions of boric acid, anhydrous borax, borax pentahydrate to produce barium borate with single step. In the second part, before melting, sodium carbonate was added to these mixtures. After the second stage, barium sulfate was used as the source of barium and coke was used as the carbon source at all studies. Firstly, disodium octaborate tetrahydrate was used as the source of boron and after the end of this study barium sulphide and barium borate were observed in the samples with the XRD analyzes. After this stage, barium sulfate, coke and boron oxide were used in different ratios to produce barium borate with single step. When the XRD analyzes of the obtained products were made, it was seen that with single step barium borate was obtained and also TGA analyzes were performed to investigate the reactions. 1: 10: 0.8 for the molar ratio of barium sulfate: carbon: boron oxide mixture; barium borate was synthesized by determining 900 o C for temperature and 11 minutes for time. A plant flow chart was prepared in accordance with the determined parameters and financial analysis was performed. As a result of the financial evaluations, the technical and economic feasibility of the barium borate production facility with a capacity of 1 000 tons / year was evaluated.
