Determination of 18 years and older individuals' level of basic disaster awareness (information) residing in Yavuz Selim Neighbourhood in Erzincan

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to determine 18 years and older individuals' level of basic disaster awareness information residing in Yavuz Selim neighbourhood in Erzincan. This is a type of descriptive research. The population of study consists of those aged 18 years and older residing in Yavuz Selim neighbourhood in Erzincan. For sample, due to accessibility all the 349 students studying in Yavuz Selim elementary school were given 2 surveys for each of them and they were wanted to bring them back after filling them. 561 surveys were brought back. The statistical analysis of the obtained data was carried out with SPSS 15.0. program and Chi-Square test (Pearson chi square test) and Mann Whitney U, Yates Corecceted and Kruskal Wallis tests were used to evaluate them. Among the individuals who participated to research 314 were female and 247 were male. As a result of the study it was found that most of the participants were between the age of 28-37 (%45.5), and among them %36.4 were high school graduate, %87 were married and %38.1 were housewives. With the aim of determining individual's basic disaster awareness, people's answers were evaluated from 14 questions given in appendix-2 regarding the information level of basic disaster awareness. Scoring system was as such; each correct answer was 1 point and incorrect answer was 0 point. 395 participants' average of the information level of basic disaster management was 7,9±1,9 and median was found as 8,0 (0,0;12,0). A statistically significant difference between the participants' age group and their information level of basic disaster management score was found (p<0,05). Also a statistical difference was seen between the individuals' marital status and their information level of basic disaster management score (p<0,05). No statistical difference was found between the participants' gender, education, jobs and their information level of basic disaster (p<0,05). It was determined that as the participants' level of education increased average score of their information level of basic disaster also increased, too. A statistical difference was found between the participants' training about disaster and their information level of basic disaster score (p<0,05). Average score of those who attended to disaster training was 7,1±2,5 and their median was 8,0 (2,0;11,0) on the other hand average score of those who did not attend to disaster training was 8,0±1,8 and their median was 8,0 (0,0;12,0).In the research low level of disaster training stood out. It was determined that although %12,9 of the participants got training for any disaster threat, %87,1 of them did not get any.
