Abstract:

In this study, four Echium species namely: E.italicum L, E.vulgare L, E.angustifolium Miller, E.parviflorum Moench, growing in Turkey, has been investigated by biological activity and chemical approaches. In the studies where biological activity guided isolation and structure elucidation investigations are conducted, total extracts with variouse polarity were prepared from plant material dried at room temperature and powdered, as well as the main fractions of the extract fractionated on a column of silica gel, were subjected to the DPPH free radical scavenging assay, Fe-chelating effect, Total Phenol Concentration and Total Flavonoid Concentration antioxidant activity test and wound healing activity test by Linear İnsition wound model. Fractions which displayed wound healing activity have been purified by preparative TLC and Silica gel column chromatography. The structures of the compounds obtained were elucidated by using spectral techniques (TOF LC-MS, 1H NMR and 13C NMR). As a result of these studies, the shikonin derivatives, 2-methyl-n- isobutyrylshikonin + isovalerylshikonin, acetylshikonin and deoxyshikonin were isolated. According to the research reports, there have been many studies on wound healing and other related biological actvities on these shikonin derivatives. These results are accordance with our study results and the folkloric use.
