Examinaton of the relationship between the levels of agression and levels of the emphatic tendencies of secondary education students who do sports and those who do not do sports ( the Çorum case)

Abstract:

This study was conducted in order to examine the levels of aggression and the levels of the emphatic tendencies of secondary education students who do sports and those who do not do sports. Survey model was used in this study. The universe of the study contains students attending secondary education institutions of Ministry of Education located in the city center of Çorum province in the academic year 2010-2011. The sample of the study is 514 secondary education students (266 males, 248 females) receiving education in the secondary education institutions in the city center of Çorum province, who were chosen randomly. 247 of these students (48.1 %) do sports while 267 of them (51.9 %) do not do sports. Aggressiveness Inventory developed by İpek İlter Kiper and Emphatic Tendency Scale developed by Prof. Dr. Üstün Dökmen in addition to the personal information form prepared by the researcher were used as data collection instrument in the present study. Pearson Correlation Analysis, Multivariate Analysis of Variance and One-Way Analysis of Variance (Anova) were used for analyzing the data. Scheffe test was used in order to determine the source of difference at the end of variance analysis. Study results indicate that emphatic tendency scores and assertiveness scores of female students are higher than those of male students. It was determined that emphatic tendency scores of students of Science High School, Anatolian Teacher's Training High School and Anatolian High School are higher than those of students of Vocational High School. It was observed that hostile aggressiveness, assertiveness and general aggression scores of students in whose family individuals do sports are higher than those of the students in whose family people do not do sports. It was realized that assertiveness scores of students doing sports are higher than those of the students not doing sports. It was found that emphatic tendency scores of students who are national sportsmen are higher than those of students who are club sportsmen. It was determined that there is a significant low negative relationship between hostile aggressiveness and emphatic tendency, there is a significant medium positive relationship between assertiveness and emphatic tendency, and there is a significant low negative relationship between passive aggressiveness and emphatic tendency.
