Abstract:Radio-TV stations, wind turbines, high voltage lines, billboards, flag poles, marine platforms etc. expose to uplift force in the vertical direction due to wind, wave, earthquake or uplifting force of water. For these structures to bear the uplift forces safely, horizontal plate anchors are used. The uplift capacity of horizontal plate anchors are depended on the embedment depth of anchors, size of anchors, relative density of soil (internal friction angle and dilatation angle of soil) where it is embedment and roughness of anchors. But in sometimes the increase of these parameters (anchors size, embedment depth, relative density of soil) is not possible in terms of feasibility, labor and cost. So, it is necessary to reinforce the soil where anchors are embedment. In recent years, horizontal plate anchors have been reinforced with geosynthetic materials. Within the scope of this study, change the tensile behaviour of horizontal plate anchors, these are square (B=200mm) and circular (D=225mm) had an equivalent area, reinforced with geocells on the cohesionless soil with 65% relative density were investigated. The tensile behaviour of the anchors embedded in three different depths (H=200,300,450 mm) was firstly investigated for unreinforced condition, then investigated for reinforced condition with geocells made of HDPE, height was 100,150 mm and width was 0.8, 1.6, 2.4 and 4 times of anchors width. According to test results, depending on height and width of the geocell, the uplift capacity of anchors increased by 1.05 to 3.04 times and peak displacement of anchors at the moment of the uplift capacity increased by 1.08 to 5.03. It was seen that the effect of geometrical shape of anchors on the uplift capacity was negligible. It was observed that, improvement of uplift capacity is a marginal, geocell width larger than 2.4 times the width of anchors. The experimental design was modelled as a miniature and failure surfaces and dispersion angles were determined. According to test results, an equation was proposed for determining the uplift capacity of horizontal anchors reinforced with geocells.
