Abstract:Urban transport systems are systems that work together to transport traffic participants and are composed of many components that work together in harmony such as people, vehicles, roads, bridges, sidewalks, rivers, railways, metro lines and traffic signals. Today, what the transport planners are trying to do when planning urban transport is actually searching the most efficient, safe, cost effective and appropriate solution (s) to protect the natural environment in order to move the participants of this system from one place to another. This quest emerges as the “optimization” stage in the transportation planning (and practice) process. Optimization is the maximizing an “objective function” by using policy tools to ensure that selected indicators in a transport system reach to the desired targets. The use of optimization techniques in transportation planning does not go far back. However, advantages such as consideration of previously proposed solutions, comparison of their effects with other proposals or being a more inclusive and acceptable way to determine the best strategy have led to the implementation of many optimization techniques in transportation planning applications in a short time. In this study, a summary of optimization techniques will be prepared with literature review. The three methods selected among the common techniques that can be used to solve certain transportation problems, their advantages and overlap areas, will be explained with examples from the application.
