Abstract:

Undrained shear strength (Su), an important soil parameter for determination of the behavior of cohesive soils, can be quickly determined via laboratory tests of the vane (LV), unconfined compressive (UC), pocket penetrometer (PP), fall cone (FC) and unconsolidated-undrained (UU). However, the literature still lacks the correlations between undrained shear strength values obtained from these tests. In this study, correlations between undrained shear strength results obtained from LV, UC, PP, FC, and UU laboratory tests on clay samples prepared at different water content (w) were determined as a function of the liquidity index. The highest values of undrained shear strength were obtained from the FC tests while the lowest values were acquired from the UC tests. On the other hand, the shear strength values of cohesive soils that were obtained from LV and PP tests were approximately the same. The determination of the undrained shear strength of cohesive soils and the correlations between the PP and other laboratory experiments are also examined in this study. It has been determined that the use of PP is very reliable.
