Abstract:

This thesis study was conducted mainly to determine the amount of bisphenol-a, a monomer in polycarbonate plastic used in the production of pet bottles, in urine specimens of children. For this purpose, Ankara Medikalpark Hospital was chosen as the pilot region.The necessary permissions regarding the ethics of the study were taken in advance. Urine samples of 100 volunteer children, aged 0-12 years, were used. Urine samples were analyzed for BFA levels by HPLC method. According to the experimental results, the mean BFA concentration in girls in the study was 3,183 μg/l and the BFA concentration in boys was 2,833 μg/l. It has been shown that BFA amounts do not show any significant difference according to age. As a result, weight factor was found to be acceptable as a criterion in the amount of ethane BFA. The result was that BFA quantities did not differ significantly from the drinking water source used. What is surprising is, the BFA concentration average for children living in rural areas (X=5,838) has been higher than the BFA concentration average for residents living in the city center (X=2,948). This result shows that the results of industrialization is almost impossible to come across with clean drinking water.
