Abstract:

Due to the functional properties of special boron products, which have become one of the indispensable products of technology with a wide range of applications, their importance is increasing in the world today; it is taking its place in technology as a must-have product. Boron hydrides, borates, boranes, elemental boron and fluoroborates, which are special boron products, are examples of some boron compounds. For example; fluoroborates; they have a wide range of uses such as catalyst in organic reactions, flame retardant in textiles, to increase optical properties in glasses, as a pesticide against insects and fungi. In this study, the synthesis of cobalt fluoroborate, one of the fluoroborates, is carried out by applying two different methods, the mechanochemical and the wet method. In the synthesis of cobalt fluoroborate by mechanochemical method; cobalt fluoride and elemental boron are used as reactants; the optimum mole ratio is found by samples prepared at different molar ratio of mechanical grinding in a ball mill for a certain period. The synthesis is continued at different times; time optimization was made. As consequence, most efficient results are obtained with reactant molar ratio (nB/nCoF2) 1:1 and a mechanochemical reaction that carried out for 2000 min in a ball mill. Cobalt oxide and fluoroboric acid are used as reactants in the synthesis of cobalt fluoroborate by wet method. In the synthesis in question, the effects of reactant molar ratio, temperature and time parameters are determined separately; optimum conditions have been determined. 97% purity cobalt fluoroborate is synthesized at a molar ratio of reactant (nHBF4/nCo3O4) 12:1 and 90°C. FT-IR and BF4 - ion selective electrodes are used in characterization studies. Solutions of the synthesized cobalt fluoroborate are prepared at different concentrations, impregnated with fabrics and LOI tests were performed. When the flame retardant property of cobalt fluoroborate was examined with the LOI test method, it is understood that the cobalt fluoroborate is highly effective in terms of retarding flame formation.
