Abstract:

Situations that affects working performance in a negative manner has a great importance for both employees and firms. The purpose of this study is determining precedence of demotivating factors that affect performances of architects in Turkey with the help of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Analytic Network Process (ANP) techniques. Demotivating factors used in this project are taken from a study named Analysis of architects' demotivating factors in design firms which is written by Lukumon O. Oyedele and published in the International Journal of Project Management in 2012. Generally, cultural properties of that societies are also examined while determining the motivating and demotivating factors. For this reason, factors examined in the study of Oyedele are rearranged for Turkey based on discussions with Asst. Prof. Yağmur Topraklı from Gazi Universty Department of Architecture. Degrees of importance of the factors are determined with the help of experts from Gazi University, Department of Architecture. Those factors are evaluated via binary comparison matrices with 1 to 9 scale, which are suggested by Saaty. There are 3 main demotivating factors in the study, which are demotivating factors about project, factors about design team/co-worker and, organisational demotivating factors. Additionally, there are 36 sub-factors which are belongs to those 3 main factors. Results shows that based on ANP and AHP techniques architectures are mostly affected by organisational demotivating factors. Degree of importance of demotivating factors about project and, demotivating factors about design team/co-worker are equal. In the AHP technique, the most important factor among the all sub-factors is factor of inept leadership personal behaviours, which is a sub-factor of organisational demotivating factors, and the least important one is factor of clients demand for radical and high-degree of innovation in design which is a sub-factor of demotivating factors about the project. In the ANP technique, the most important factor among the all sub-factors is factors of Frequent design changes/variations which is a sub-factor of demotivating factors about the project, and the least important one is factor of clients demand for radical and high-degree of innovation in design which is a sub-factor of demotivating factors about the project.
