Abstract:58 VIII. SUMMARY It has already been shown that the changes in local immune response in the peritoneal surfaces and peritoneal fluid could play a role in the etiopathogenesis of endometriosis. In this study, serum CA 125, TGF-01, IL-6, IL-12 and VEGF levels were evaluated in 15 patients with peritoneal endometriosis, 47 patients with endometrioma, and 17 control patients making a total of 79 cases in order to clarify the etiopathogenesis of endometriosis and to define new markers that can be used in the diagnosis and follow-up. Of the cytokines that were evaluated only a weak correlation were found between the serum levels of IL-6 and IL-12 (r=-0, 256, p=0, 006). Serum TGF-01 levels were found to be weakly correlated to the stage (r=-0, 424, p=0, 001) and the score (r=-0, 395, p=0, 002) of the endometriosis. Mean serum CA 125 levels were significantly higher in the endometrioma group (75.34 ± 1 10, 88 U/ml) when compared to control group (12, 88 ± 7, 89 U/m) (p =0, 03) and early stage peritoneal endometriosis group (14, 37 ± 7, 86 U/ml) (p=0, 05). Mean serum TGF-pi levels were significantly higher in the endometrioma group (17849, 18± 6856, 72 pg/ml) when compared to early stage peritoneal endometriosis group (1 1286 ± 4860 pg/ml) (p = 0, 002). In addition, mean serum TGF-pl levels were found to be significantly different with regard to the stage of the endometriosis (between stage I to IH and stage I to IV). Mean serum IL-12 levels were found to be decreased in patients with endometrioma and having infertility history (49, 53 ±35, 15 pg/ml) compared to paitents without infertility (77, 68 ± 26, 16 pg/ml), (p=0, 01). There were no differences in mean serum VEGF ve EL- 12 levels between the study and control groups. Based on these data, it has been suggested that serum TGF-pi and IL-6 levels might be used in clinical practice as a serum marker for endometriosis.
