Abstract:
This study was carried out as a descriptive study to determine the incidence of nausea and vomiting
and coping methods post discharge. The study was carried out with 350 patients who were operated
under general anesthesia and discharged within 24 hours in the Otorhinolaryngology (ENT),
Orthopedics and Traumatology, Urology and General Surgery services between 3 July 2017 -6
March 2018 in Erciyes University Medical Faculty Hospitals. The data were collected by “Patient
Diagnosis Form'' and ''Nausea-Vomiting Diary’ developed by the researcher from the literature.
The data were collected from the files after the surgery of the patients (average 2-4 hours) by face
to face interviews with them and on the 1st and 2nd days post discharge by telephone. It was found
that the patients had nausea and vomiting at 30.6% of the postoperative day, 26.3% on the first day
post discharge and 3.4% on the second day post discharge. Of the 92 patients with nausea post
discharge, 26.1% experienced mild, 44.6% moderate, 20.7% high and 8.7% severe nausea. In
coping with nausea and vomiting post discharge; resting (49%), breathing fresh air (23.4%), eating
something (17%) and drinking something (10.6%) were used as alternative methods. There was a
statistically significant difference between nausea and vomiting risk factors and nausea post
discharge; female gender, a history of nausea or vomiting and opioid administration or nausea in
the postanesthesia care unit (p<0.05). According to the data obtained from the research; In order to
prevent complications related to nausea and vomiting, it is recommended to perform risk scoring
effectively and to evaluate whether the pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods are
effective in eliminating the patient's nausea.
