11 PRODUCTION OF SILICON NITRIDE (Si3N4) CERAMIC POWDER FROM DIATOMITE BY CARBO-THERMAL REDUCTION AND NITRIDATION PROCESSES (M. Sc Thesis) Tuncay KURT GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY September 2002 ABSTRACT In this study, Sİ3N4 type technologic ceramic powder was produced by using carbothermal redaction nitridation method from diatom ite taken from Ankara- Kizilcahamam region. Test samples were prepared by mixing 99 % purity and mean powder size of 2.4 \im of carbon black and maximum particle size of 150 p.m diatomite with C/Si02 molar ratio of 4. Prepared samples was subjected to CTRN process at temperatures of 1300, 1350 and 1400 °C for 4, 8 and 16 hours. CTRN process was conducted in an atmosphere controlled tube furnace in nitrogen gas flowing 5 cm3/min. All products were examined by XRD and SEM-EDX to determine the amount of transformation, morphology and chemical composition of product. The results indicated that the best Sİ3N4 transformation occurred at 1400 °C for 16 h.
