Abstract:

Among synthetic xenoestrogens, bisphenol A (BPA) is the most important man-made compound. The purpose of this study was to investigate the histopathological changes that can occur in the lungs of rats and to investigate the protective effect of taurine and curcumin and to investigate the effects of BPA on the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione-Stransferase (GST) activity and the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) which is the determinant of lipid peroxidation. Male Wistar rats weighing 250-300 g were used in the study. These groups are water, olive oil, BPA, taurine, curcumin, BPA+taurine, BPA+curcumin and there were 6 rats in each group. After 4-weeks of treatment, each rat's lung tissue was examined under light microscope and SOD, CAT, GPx and GST activities and MDA levels in lung tissues were measured. At the end of the fourth week, there was no difference among control, olive oil, taurine and curcumin groups. In the BPA treated group, while a decrease was observed in SOD, CAT, GPx and GST activities, an increase was observed in level of MDA compared to control group. While some histopathological changes were detected in lung tissue in BPA treated group like infiltration, hemorrhage, emphysema, while less histopathological changes were observed in BPA+taurine, BPA+curcumin groups. As a result, taurine and curcumin significantly reduced BPA induced pulmonary toxicity in rats, but did not protect completely
