Abstract:

The main purpose of this study is to design, implement, and evaluate an online learning environment based on STE(A)M integration in the context of renewable energy. Design-based research method was adopted in the study; the online learning environment developed during the process was structured on the open source EdX platform. The study group consisted of 45 pre-service teachers from different branches. Based on the interdisciplinary integrated structure in the developed learning environment, interactive modules, video contents, measurement tools and application activities were designed within the framework of the renewable energy theme. Academic Achievement Test and STE(A)M Based Thinking Survey were used in the data collection process and the data obtained were evaluated with qualitative and quantitative analysis methods. The findings of the study show that pre-service teachers made a significant improvement in both their academic achievement and interdisciplinary thinking skills thanks to the online learning environment. In addition, it was determined that they established strong links between renewable energy and STEM fields through crosscutting concepts and made progress in high-level skills such as sustainability, design-based thinking and problem solving. In this context, the study provides important contributions to the integration of STE(A)M-based digital learning environments into teacher education processes and paves the way for future studies.
