Abstract:
In this study, the sustainability of Kahramanmaraş yemeni and craft, which is an important part of Anatolian footwear culture, was examined in the context of product and production through participatory and collaborative design in the new product development process. Firstly, two exploratory studies were carried out in which the researcher was involved as a mediator-observer in order to determine the design intervention topics that could be applied in sustainability studies in the context of product and production. Afterwards, the workshop, which was held in two different types of groups (mixed and homogeneous) consisting of graduate students or graduates from the departments of industrial design, textile and fashion design and traditional handicrafts, was held on a virtual platform due to the pandemic process. The workshop was documented with video recording, product sketches, field notes and photographs. In the workshop the virtual workshop of each group was evaluated as a process and a result product within its own process. Within the core value of the existing Kahramanmaraş yemeni in each group workshop, it is aimed to develop new food products by questioning sustainability concerns with its aesthetic value as its visual quality, its functional value in use, innovations that can be made about the material, innovation in tools and equipment in the production process, and the titles of customized yemeni for certain user groups. The researcher, who became a designer within the scope of the workshop designed a process that facilitates the action of the participants in the new product development process suitable for the craftsman's production process, supports collective work, and is a mediator in the prototype process of the final product. Within the scope of the study, an intervention methodology that can be used in the product development processes of traditional footwear productions in cooperation with participants, craftsmen and designers was presented, as a result of the practices in which craft production was carried out specifically for the Kahramanmaraş yemeni craft.
