Abstract:

67 VIII. SUMMARY Degradation of the extracellular matrix is an important stage in tumor invasion and metastasis. Especially matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a group of proteolitic enzimes that play a role in this degradation process. MMPs have associations with behaviors of the tumor and poor prognosis in alot of cancer types. The objective of the present study is prediction of the tumor prognosis in the ovarian carcinoma. Thirty cases with malign ovarian tumor, 10 cases with benign ovarian pathology, and 30 control healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. MMP-2 and MMP-7 measurements of these 70 cases were studied with ELIS A in the serum samples. Meanwhile, preoperative and postoperative MMP-2 and MMP-7 values of the malign group were compared each other. Results considered in the units of ng/mL. Mean age of the group with malignant ovarian tumor was 56.2 (18-84) year. We have found mean serum MMP-2 value significantly lower in malign group (227,51±9,91ng/ml) than in control group (279,12 ± 73,75 ng/ml) ( p = 0.0001 ). MMP-7 values were measured higher in malign group (10.24 ± 1.35 ng/ml ) than in control group (3.29 ±1.64 ng/mL, p = 0.0001). We have found postoperative MMP-7 values significantly lower than preoperative MMP-7 values ( p = 0.005) and MMP-7 values in group with germ cell histology were measured lower than group with epithelial histology (p =0.028), When we stratified patients in according to the tumor stage, we observed higher values of MMP-7 in respect to the advanced stage. Stage I-IH (p = 0.047) and stage I-IV (p = 0.041). MMP-7 values of group with positive lymph node metastasis were higher than the group with no lymph node metastasis ( p = 0,035 ).-68 In conclusion, despite the concern in relation to the predictivity of the serum MMP-2 values in ovarian carcinoma, MMP-7 values may be correlated with prognostic factors, like, widespread of the tumor, lymph node metastasis and tumor stage. However, further research have needed for either opinion.
