Abstract:

This study focuses on graphic design and its education. The methods applied by teachers in the graphic design courses in Vocational High Schools and in High schools for Fine Arts are evaluated within the coverage of this study. Throughout the study, the teachers working in the concerned schools are required to contribute to the study with their personal opinions on the subject. The target group of the study consists of the teachers who give graphic design courses in Vocational High Schools in Ankara. The aim of the study is to reach all the related teachers in the field. The practice of the study has been carried out in 18 schools 17 of which are Vocational High Schools and one of which is a High School for Fine Arts. 63 teachers from these schools have taken part in the study. For the study, a questionnaire is used to determine and examine the methods, techniques and the use of the equipments in the graphic design courses in order to evaluate the current situation in these schools from the teachersz points of view. The results of the study indicate that; 1. The most widely used method and technique in the graphic design courses by the teachers are showing samples which is followed by lecturing and question-answer. The least used methods and techniques by the teachers are observation-on-site, vii dramatization and discussion, which shows that teachers still tend to use traditional methods and techniques. 2. The most important criteria for the teachers while choosing their educational methodologies has been determined to be the appropriateness to creativity. 3. It is of utmost importance to acquaint students with the uses of computer technologies in the field of graphic design. 4. The basic reasons for the insufficent use of technical equipment are the high costs of the equipment, the lack of technical equipment in the schools or the limited financial sources.
