Abstract:

Village rooms are public spaces unique to villages where villagers come together for various activities such as chatting, playing games, and singing folk songs, usually in the evening, as well as on special occasions such as funerals, weddings, and festivals. Furthermore, guests visiting or traveling to the village stay until they leave and meet their needs in this place. These places were frequently used in the context of cultural and social communication and solidarity, which is one of the indispensable rules of life in the village. Although usually built by the notable persons of the village, these rooms are the common property of the village. Their elaborate and qualified craft and materials distinguish them from the houses. They also include necessities such as cupboards, a closet, gusülhane (bathing cubicle), couches, and a fireplace for heating purposes. Their use has decreased over time due to migration and individualization. Most of these spaces have entered the decay process due to abandonment, and some were demolished before they were documented. Within the scope of this thesis, these places, where the material and craftsmanship knowledge of the past periods are brought together to include much information in the context of aesthetic and structural solutions, have been investigated in the Central district of Sivas province. Following the literature research on village rooms, identification and documentation studies were carried out in the context of 102 buildings and their immediate surroundings in 154 villages of the central district; visual and vectorial documentation were made. Finally, the data obtained were analyzed and presented in terms of general features such as the qualities, plan, space, and façade features, building materials, and techniques of these buildings in the process of extinction.
