Prioritization of the groundwater potential zones of Burdur basin by using morphometric analysis and analytic hierarchy process methods

Abstract:

Sustainable water resources management in basins dominated by arid and semi-arid climates is possible by evaluating, developing and managing not only surface water resources but also underground water resources. Morphometric characteristics of the basin play an important role in determining the groundwater potential regions. Within the scope of this study, the Burdur Basin was chosen as the study area which was divided into 7 sub basins, namely Atabey, Burdur, Karataş, Salda, Yarışlı, Akgöl and Acıgöl. Topographic and hydrological maps such as basin and sub-basin boundaries, water flow directions and drainage networks were then determined. By using these maps, linear, areal and relief parameters such as form factor, length ratio, circularity ratio, bifurcation ratio, drainage density, infiltration number, stream frequency, channel maintenance coefficient, runoff length, relief ratio and roughness ratio for each sub-basin were computed. Then, the parameter weights were determined by using the morphometric parameters and the Analytical Hierarchy Process method, and the sub-basins were thus prioritized according to their groundwater potentials using the COPRAS method and values of morphometric parameters. Results showed that Atabey was determined as the sub-basin with the lowest and Salda with the highest groundwater potential. Furthermore, features that cannot be directly expressed with numerical values such as geomorphology, lineament density, aquifer status, land use, precipitation and the parameters of slope, soil depth and drainage density which affect the groundwater potential of the Burdur Basin were expressed and prioritized in layers throughout the basin with the Analytical Hierarchy Process method. As a result of the prioritization process, the sub-basins with the lowest and highest groundwater potential of the Burdur Basin were determined as Salda and Acıgöl, respectively. Results of the study showed that the basin can be evaluated in terms of groundwater potential with the methods applied and reliable results can be obtained for pioneering studies.
