ANALYSIS OF FACTORS EFFECTING TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS (M.sc. Thesis) Mehmet Arif ŞAHİNLİ GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY September 1997 ABSTRACT In the first part of the study, general information; in the second part, general characteristics and: periodical changes are analysed. In the third part, conditions in Turkey; in the fourth part, factors causing traffic accidents; in the fifth part reasons of traffic accidents in Turkey and insufficiencies after accidents and in the sixth part, personality of drivers are studied. Incluuing the variables defining best the data and excluding the variables contributing less to the model are called "selection of variables" or "selection of the best subcluster equation" in multilinear regression analysis. By regarding this, in the empirical application part of the study, it is aimed to analyse factors supposed to effect traffic accidents. Data collected by the State Institute of Statistics, is used for the period of 1985-1995 to analyse the variables number of drivers, number of vehicles, length of highways, length of motorways, number of passengers and number of primary school students registered new. Forward selection and backward exclusion methods among variable selection techniques in multiple regression are used. Results are interpreted in the part of result and proposals.
