Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of supporting mathematics lessons with augmented reality on students' spatial ability and academic achievement. For this purpose, educational materials were prepared by connecting markers with 3D models that were drawn with 3ds Max program on BuildAR interface. The research took place in 2013-2014 academik years on eigthy-eight 6th grade students studying at Şehit Öğretmen Ortaokul in Yenimahalle, Ankara. The study Pretest-posttest control experimental research model was used was conducted with four classes that made of 2 classes each experimental group and control group. There were fourty-four students in each groups. For four weaks, while augmented reality applications were used in experimental group, 2D drawings and objects that were came in class were used in control group. The collected quantitative Datas from MGMP Spatial Ability Test and Achievement Test were analized with ITEMANN program. Also the collected qualitative datas from Teacher-Student Opinion Forms were analyzed using content analysis. According to the collected quantitative data, a significant increase has occurred in the experimental and control group students' spatial ability. However, when spatial ability and posttest scores between groups are compared, the difference was not statistically significant. According to the analysis conducted for academic achievement test, while achievement points of the experimental group increased to form a significant difference, in the control grup point shave not increased significantly. On the other hand; when academic achievement posttest scores of the students in the experimental and control group were compared, there was no statistically significant difference between groups. According to information obtained in the interview form of students, students stated that the find augmented reality applications to be fun, attention-grabbing, visualising abstract concept in the mind, stimulating and facilitating learning. They also stated that over the coming years, they want to use in the different courses. The teachers conducting lessons, on the other hand, stated that applications were attractive to both students and teachers. They stated they had difficulty in describing the topic "Prism" but AR applications helped students to visualize particularly moving three-dimensional objects in their minds. They also added that in the use of these applications, there was no difficulty.
