Abstract:

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of using educational materials such as "model" and "software" on the academic achievement of students on "sex dependent inheritance" lesson and to investigate the student views on this educational process. The study group consisted of 97 students (control group: 31, study group 1 (model): 33 and study group 2 (software group): 33) who were in the 10th grade in a high school in the province of Altındağ, Ankara in the academic year of 2016-2017. The success of teaching materials was compared using pre-test, post-test and retention test. In addition, semi-structured interview form which includes students' views on training methods were taken. The obtained data were analyzed using the SPSS 24.0. Study result show that the post-test achievement scores of the students in the study group 1 (model) and study group 2 (software group) were significantly higher than the achievement test scores of the students in the control group (p<.05). The students in the study group 1 (model) were found to have a higher post-test achievement scores than the students's in the study group 2 (software group) (p=.004). In addition, the post-test achievement scores of the students in all groups were significantly higher than the pre-test achievement scores. As a result, it seems that the model and software which were designed to support education on "sex-linked inheritance" facilitate learning, contribute to the concretization of the subject, and increase success. Further studies with larger study group are needed to support these findings.
