Abstract:

Factors such as the development in information technologies, personal computer ownership, increasing number of smartphones, the spread of technologies such as VR-AR, the popularization of online markets and social networks have made video games rapidly developing and popular products in the entertainment industry. Despite the rapid growth of the video game industry within the entertainment sector, there are some problems in the development process of video games, especially at the design process, and studies on this process are relatively insufficient. In this thesis, some problems regarding the practice of video game design were identified in the data obtained as a result of the literature review and the exploratory research conducted with developers in the independent video game industry. The study aims to improve the design processes of this group by focusing on independent game developers, especially small and inexperienced teams. Focusing on these problems identified on the targeted user, it was decided to develop a method and tool that could support and contribute to the practice of video game design. In the design process of the VOT method and tool developed in this context, video game components literature and design methods literature were reviewed, and the experiences of independent video game developers on game components were reached through fieldwork. In the last step of the development process of the VOT method and tool, the decisions taken for the method and tool were tested and evaluated with the criteria in action research and the development of the method continued in this process. In six cycles of action research, the effectiveness of the VOT method in video game design practice, learnability, satisfaction, flexibility and number of errors were measured. "Research for design" approaches was adopted in the research method created to create a solution space through the problems identified in the thesis. With this goal, the frameworks and methodology developed through the concepts explored throughout the study can be used as a reference for game developers and game researchers.
