Abstract:

In Turkey, the police station buildings have several direct and indirect meanings in the eyes of the people. It is an important need that these buildings have the architectural characteristics of the citizen's desire which strengthen the relationship between citizens and police. For this reason, the aim of this study is to determine what people perceive from different police station facades and so what meanings are assigned to them. By the help of this information, it will be easier to design a police station facade contributing the city's architecture knowledge and holding place in the city as a unique figure. Within the context of this study, the internet photographs of 60 buildings serving as police stations or having a potential to serve as police stations were evaluated by an expert group of architects (n=5). As a result of this evaluation, the architectural characteristics of each photograph were determined. Then, the number of photographs was reduced to 20 based on these architectural characteristics. Participants (n=133) consisted of 32 architects, 51 policeman and 50 teachers were asked to rate these 20 building photographs by a questionnaire survey comprising questions/situations under the main titles of Approachability, Professionalism, Prestige and Liking. The data obtained in the survey results were analyzed with SPSS (Statistical Packages for the Social VII Sciences). In accordance with the survey results, in the design of a police station which will have the admiration of the whole of society, it must be taken into account that the building is approachable and especially the prestigious. If the police stations will be designed to obtain the appreciation of the whole of society, it is required that these buildings should have some architectural characteristics such as clearly perceived entrance when looked from the outside, durable and stable facade, mainly glass surfaces giving an idea about inside, fine-looking, a public building view with its monotone fenestration.
