Abstract:In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), which are functionalized with hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, reinforced polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers and unmodified, APTES (3-Aminopropyl triethoxysilane), GPTMS (3-Glycidoxypropyl-trimethoxysilane) modified halloysite (HNT) nanotube reinforced polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers were successfully synthesized by the electrospinning method in a uniform, smooth and without bead defects. Physicochemical properties of bio-composite nanofibers which are reinforced with MWCNT and HNT, and effect of reinforcement elements in different ratios on the morphological and mechanical properties of the material were investigated. The effect of MWCNT reinforcement ratio and functional groups and the effect of HNT reinforcement ratio and modification on the bio-composite nanofiber properties of the electrospun were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and tensile stress tests.AFM nanoindentation and tensile stress test results showed that the highest strength values were achieved with carbon nanotube reinforcement for the polymer matrix. The carbon nanotube, which is added to trace amounts of the polymer matrix in order to prevent toxic effects, was functionalized with carboxyl and hydroxyl groups and increased the Young modulus value of the pure polymer from 29 MPa to 617 MPa and 2481 MPa, respectively. Young modulus values of unmodified, APTES and GPTMS modified halloysite nanotubes increased of 1161.1 MPa, 1456.3 MPa and 2002.1MPa, respectively.Just like AFM results, tensile strength test results confirm the mechanical properties of the material with MWCNT and HNT reinforcements. All results obtained in general, PCL nanofibres containing functionalized MWCNT and modified HNT show that their mechanical properties have been improved and has been produced having better mechanical strength of biocompatible nanocomposites, and thus they are potential candidates for biomedical applications.
