Abstract:The aim of this study is determination of serum resistance, production of siderophore, hemolytic activity and the production of extended spectrum beta lactamases (ESBL) in Klebsiella species isolated from meat and chicken offered for consumption in Ankara. In this study 60 meat samples which consist of 30 samples of calf meat (mince and small chunks ) and 30 samples of chicken parts ( breasts and drumsticks ) obtained from different markets and butchers in Ankara , were analyzed between July 2007 and November 2008. Isolation of Klebsiella species were purposed and the isolates were identified by biochemical tests as species. Identified species were analyzed in terms of virulence factors such as siderophore production, serum resistance and haemolytic activity. Furthermore, the production of extended spectrum beta lactamase and antibiotic resistance were analyzed. Among 45 Klebsiella isolates were identified as Klebsiella pneumoniae and Klebsiella oxytoca in 21 (47.4 %) and 24 (53,3 %) isolates respectively. Siderophore production of 45 isolates were studied with Chrome Azurol Sulphate Agar and it was determined that 20 (44 %) isolates were siderophore producers. Serum resistance of isolates were determined using human serum which inactivated at 56oC and it was found that 17 ( 38 %) isolates were resistant to the human serum. Blood agar base was used for the vii determination of hemolytic activity and 30 (67 %) isolates were determined as haemolysin producers. Production of extended spectrum beta-laktamase (ESBL) of isolates were studied by double disc diffusion method and 13 (29 %) of them were found as producers of ESBL. All 45 Klebsiella isolates were found as susceptible to meropenem and imipenem, besides that all isolates were found as resistant to ampicilin and amoxicillin.
