Abstract:

The study was conducted as a randomized controlled intervention study in pretest-posttest design to determine the effects of computer-assisted education on the level of knowledge, level of anxiety, post-discharge problems and functional disability level of patients who have had surgery for lumbar herniated disc. The study was conducted with 62 patients, 31 of which were included in the experimental group and 31 in the control group. For data collection, the Patient Identification Form, Information Assessment Form, Oswestry Disability Index, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Post-Discharge Problem Determination Form, Daily Activities Assessment Form, and Assessment Form of Patient Education Site for Herniated Disc were used. Education and counseling were provided to the patients in the experimental group through the patient education site for herniated disc. An education booklet containing the same contents as the education site for herniated disc was given to the patients in the control group. The questionnaires were filled out again on the 15th day, 1 month and 3 months after the surgery. For evaluation of the data, percentile calculation, mean, median, Chi square, Fisher Exact, Friedman's Two-way ANOVA, Independent t-test, Mann-Whitney U Test, Wilcoxon Test and Repeated Measures ANOVA tests were used. According to the findings, it was observed that after 15 days, 1 month and 3 months, the patients in the experimental group's scores for knowledge and functional capacities were higher than the control group, and the experimental group experienced lower levels of anxiety. According to the statistical evaluations, the difference between the groups was determined to be significant (p <0.05). As a result of the study, it was determined that for patients having surgery for lumbar herniated disc, the patients who have received computer-assisted education had higher levels of knowledge, greater functional capacities and lower levels of anxiety compared to the patients who were followed-up with educational booklets. Considering the results of the study, we suggest more widespread use of computer-aided education with patients who have surgery for lumbar herniated disc.
