Abstract:

Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease. Periodontal diseases are the chronic inflammatory diseases of dental gum and the tissues surrounding the teeth due to the microorganisms in dental plaques. In this study, we aimed to determine the relation between periodontal diseases and psoriasis. 103 patients that admitted to Gazi University Medical Faculty Department of Dermatology and diagnosed with psoriasis and a control group of 103 patients with similar age, gender and without any systemic disease were involved in the study. Clinical periodontal indexes such as plaque index, gingival index, bleeding on probing, probing depth were performed to analyze the periodontal status of the participants. A statistically significant difference was found between the patients with psoriasis and control group about incidence of periodontal disease. Furthernore, in the psoriasis group all periodontal indexes were statistically higher than test group (PI; p=0.01, GI; p=0.001, SK; p=0.01, CD; p=0.05). As a consequence, a correlation between psoriasis and periodontal diseases was detected while there was not a relation between the severity of psoriasis and the severity of periodontal disease in our study (p=0.204). It is possible that periodontal diseases affect psoriasis through focal infection concept and probably the proinflammatory cytokines. Further immunologic and genetic studies would be useful in order to understand the exact role of periodontal diseases on psoriasis.
