Abstract:
Basic Design or Basic Art Education are courses that form the first stage of education as an introductory course in all departments affiliated with the design. In these courses, where design elements and design principles are shown, the aim is to increase students' abilities such as abstract thinking and manual dexterity, while gaining awareness of the elements that create a design and how to bring these elements together. In the research, in order to learn the Maturation Institutes' approach to Basic Design, teachers who provide Basic Art education in the institutes and students who took this course were interviewed. Teachers and students were asked about their thoughts and experiences about the necessity and content of this course. With this research, it is aimed to understand the place and importance of Basic Art Education in Maturation Institutes and to reveal the current situation. For the research, teachers and students of Maturation Institutes were reached from Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir sample. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a total of 12 teachers and 9 students. Through the interviews, it was seen that Basic Art Education was considered indispensable for every department, and it was observed that Basic Art Education changed not only the skills that students were expected to acquire, but also their perspective on life. As a result, it has been understood that Basic Design and Basic Art Education courses are almost equally important for every department and that they not only educate students theoretically but also prepare them for design psychologically and affect their lives. In addition, it has been understood that Basic Design, in terms of Maturation Institutes, is also of great importance in terms of traditional handicrafts.
