Abstract:
Translation, which allows both blending different communities and cultures and transferring the
culture by getting the distance shorter, has contributed to the integration of the Arab and Turkish
communities from past to present. The aim of this study is to make a contribution to the formation
of a translation movement between two languages and to provide guidance on the strategies and
methods that translators will use during this process. In this context, a theoretical background on
translation and its history has been given at first in this study. Within this framework, there has
been emphasis on the definitions about the translation and the translator from past to present, the
roles assigned to the translator, the theories and strategies put forward. In addition, the issue of
norms, which are regarded as a guide to the translator, is mentioned, and it is paid attention to
making the theories and strategies explanatory with the examples given. Also, three important
works of Naguib Mahfouz, translated from Arabic into Turkish, such as A drift on the Nile, Khan
al-Khalili and The day the leader was killed, were examined within the context of general
translation strategies, and analyzed comparatively in line with the target-oriented theory of Gideon
Toury, who is the translation scientist.
