Nano Tin Oxide Activated Carbon Composites as Cathode Catalyst Support For High-Temperature Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell
In this study Nano tin oxide activated carbon (Pt/SnO2-C) as cathode catalyst support has been synthesized for high temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells. First nano tin oxide was synthesized with average partical sizes of 18.3 and was mixed with heat treated Vulcan XC-72. The electroless deposition method was used to deposit platinum on SnO2-C mixtures. The total platinum loadings are between 20%-40% in weight. The synthesized SnO2 and Pt/SnO2-C of varying Pt catalysts were characterized using SEM, TEM, XRD and XPS. The face-centered cubic structure of nanosized Pt and the tetravalent state of nanosized tin becomes evident from XRD and XPS data. The synthesized particles of SnO2 and Pt were 20.13 nm and 4.85 nm, respectively. Electrochemical properties were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry coupled with a rotating disk electrode (RDE).
