Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the different characteristics of firms engaged in export trade is the Istanbul jewelry cluster Using Michael Porter's "microeconomics of development" theory, the characteristics of the firms and the cluster in which they operate will be determined by studying their relationships in production, solidarity, innovation and institutions and their significance for export activities. The intention is also to discuss the cluster policies that provide a better exploitation of cluster externalities in developing the competitiveness of the cluster, and thus the sustainability of export success. To this end, the relationship between exporting and structural and cluster characteristics are analyzed through a survey of 346 production firms, and the variables that are effective in export activities are analyzed through a logistic regression model. The results of the study support the positive effects of cluster externalities on exporting under certain conditions and the relationship between firm characteristics and exporting. As a conclusion, cluster policies and the responsibilities of related actors are discussed.
