Özet

As a part of vocabulary, idiom is a basic tool handing down the culture of its own society from generation to generation. Idiom helps the children have a practical connection with the culture of society in which they live. Literal works and class books are the ones of primary materials which provide the acquisition of idiom. From this point of view, nineteen works consisting of novels and stories whose writers work on children's literature are analyzed in terms of idiom though our research. According to the results of this research, the statements identified were listed and briefly evaluated according to the inclusion of national and cultural elements. At the final part of our work, the determined idioms are compared with the ones in Turkish class books in grades 5, 6, 7 and 8. Thus, it has been tried to show that a Turkish teacher can make additional contributions to the language development and culture transfer of children with novels, stories and poetry books besides the textbooks.
