Özet

The swelling potential and the effect of lime as a stabilizing agent on the swelling behavior of clays found in the residential area of Golbasi (Ankara) district was investigated. It was determined that, high plasticity clays (CH) that have medium to high swelling potential exists locally in the area with swelling potentials and swelling pressures that range between about 3.5% and 9.0%, and 65 kPa and 250 kPa, respectively. The corresponding values for clays of the area that are classified as CL were determined to be between 0.5% and 1.5%, and 5 kPa and 10 kPa, respectively. Samples of CH clays that pose a threat to lighter structures were treated with the addition of various amounts of lime (from 1% to 9% by weight) and the resulting changes in the swelling pressure and potential were examined. The results indicate that addition of 5% or more lime by weight results in a reduction of swelling potential and the swelling pressure by 91% and 73% respectively.
