The aim of this study is to determine the level of depression, related factors and its effects on university students who were selected randomly. This study was carried out in April 2005 (for a period of one-month) in a school-based medical clinic of the Faculty Education at Celal Bayar University. In order to detect the sociodemographic features and Zung Self-Depression Scale for the depression level, a questionnaire was applied to the university students by coincidence sample method and then the results were evaluated. Randomly selected 500 students were included in this study. Total number was 2,900. 279 out of 500 subjects (55.8%) were accepted to take part in the study. In literature; in a similar experiment applied in Turkey, the overall depression prevalence was 26.2%. However, in our study the depression rate was higher than the normal population. For depression, the general prevalence is 39.4% (110/279). Within the 110 depressive students; 39 of them were males (13.9%) and 71 of them were females (25.5%). Taking into consideration of the related factors about depression; there were no significant differences among the places of residence and income levels of the families. There were some significant differences among the father’s educational level and the family’s depression history. Results showed poor correlation between depression and smoking (r=0.044, p<0.01) and alcohol consumption (r=0.013, p<0.005). With these results, it’s clear that we must try our best to reduce the depression level within our study group. As a suggestion; students’ living standards and school-based facilities should be improved and psychological counseling should be provided free of charge through the faculty.
