The benefits of breast milk for the infant and the importance of breastfeeding support are now well documented. In the meantime, the use of various galactagogues both as part of lactation support and managing certain breastfeeding problems, has gained wide currency. Correspondingly, many herbal galactagogue teas, mostly in mixed-combined forms, are progressively being consumed worldwide on an unrestricted basis, usually without advice from or monitoring by health care professionals. However, data on their mechanisms of action, effectiveness and safety are very scarce and far from adequate in terms of scientific quality. Moreover, control regulations for herbal galactagogues are not satisfactory because they are defined as dietary supplements. Here, in the light of available updated medical literature and guidelines generally, the subject of herbal galactagogue tea has been reviewed in its various aspects. An unprejudiced attempt was made to establish practical implications on the use of galactagogue herbal teas within the scope of systematic and scientific breastfeeding support strategies. Information about certain herbs commonly found in galactagogue herbal teas has also been included in this chapter.
