Quantitative analysis of the synthetic cannabinoid 5F-ADB (5F-MDMB-PINACA) in narcotic substances seized in Türkiye

Özet

Synthetic cannabinoids (SCs) are among the most prominent classes of new psychoactive substances, characterized by the continuous emergence of numerous novel compounds each year. Over the past two decades, SCs have posed a significant threat to public health due to their increasing diversity, potent addictive potential, and high risk of intoxication. These substances are most commonly prepared by spraying the active compounds onto plant material. In this study, the presence of the SC 5F-MDMB-PINACA (5F-ADB) was detected using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS) in narcotic samples seized by law enforcement authorities in and around Ankara, Türkiye, between January 2019 and December 2020. Then, quantitative analysis of 5F-ADB was performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) in 41 herbal mixtures and a powder in which 5F-ADB was detected.The study also evaluated the homogeneity of 5F-ADB distribution within the plant materials. To this end, different parts of the plant samples–including fragmented leaves and stems–were analysed separately to determine whether there were quantitative differences in 5F-ADB concentration between these components. This study represents the first effort to quantitatively determine the content of synthetic cannabinoids in Türkiye and will also help to better understand the toxicological problems that may arise from SC use.
