Treatment approach for the Missing Lower Incisors with Resin-Bonded-Fixed-Prosthesis: A Case Report
Objectives:
Resin bonded bridges are
highly effective treatment option to restore the oral function and aesthetics
and result in high levels of patient satisfaction. This bridges are minimally
invasive with certain advantages such as minimal removal of the tooth structure,
minimal potential for pulpal trauma, supra gingival margin preparation and
reduced time and cost.
Case Report:
A 70-year-old female
patient was referred to the Department of Prosthodontics with complaint of
missing mandibular anterior teeth for a need of esthetic restoration with fixed
dental prosthesis. Following clinical and radiographic examinations, a
conservative and minimally invasive resin bonded fixed partial denture (RBFPD)
was indicated. Minimal tooth preparation of the abutment teeth (#32 and #42)
was performed following the standard technique on the lingual surfaces.
Modified preparations were made on the abutment teeth (#33 and #43). A metal
framework with ‘wings’ extending to the preparations was fabricated from non-precious
alloy. Holes were drilled on the metal wings. The fitting surfaces of the
‘wings’ were sandblasted to create micromechanical retentive surfaces for the
cement. The restoration was cemented using universal resin cement.
Conclusion:
The patient didn’t have
any esthetic and functional problems following 6-month period of use. Resin
bonded bridges can be highly effective in replacing missing teeth, restoring
oral function and aesthetics and result in high levels of patient satisfaction.
Given thorough patient assessment and the use of careful clinical techniques,
the resin bonded bridge should be considered more frequently as the restoration
of choice for short spans.
