Level of Perceived Social Support of Patients with Gynaecological Cancer and Affecting Factors

Özet

Objective: Social support is important in maintaining the person's health in physical and psychological diseases. For this reason, it is needed that nurses' determining the level of the social support to the patient. This research was performed in a descriptive way to determine the perceived social support by the patients with gynaecological cancer. Material and Methods: The universe of the study consisted of patients having treatment in Gynaecologic Oncology Department of Dr. Zekai Tahir Burak Gynaecology Training and Research Hospital. The sampling group was of 200 patients. The data was collected with a questionnaire and The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. The data was analyzed with percentage, mean, t test, one way variance analysis and Tukey test. Results: Mean age of the patients was 49.1 +/- 13.4 years. 23% of them was at least graduate of middle school, 84% of them were married. The patients' obtained mean score from The Multidimensional Scale of perceived social support scale was 69.4 +/- 13.1. Percevied social support mean scores of the graduates of middle school and higher, who had a job, who perceived their economic status "good" and who had information about their diagnoses were higher and the differences between the groups were significant (p<0.05). However, it was determined that characteristics like age and marital status did not affect social support (p>0.05). Conclusion: The findings of this study show that the perceived social support by the gynaecologic oncology patients were in good level and characteristics like level of education, working status, economical status and having information of their diagnoses affect perceived social support.
