In this report experience with 6000 urinary tract calculi patients treated with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is presented. Stone localization was usually floroscopic while nonopac stones were localized with ultrasound. Maximum shock wave energy and number delivered per session were 19 kV and 4000 shock waves for adults whereas 17.8kV and 3000 shock waves for children respectively. Stone localizations were 4353(72.6%) renal, 1580(26.3%) ureteral and 67(1.1%) vesical. Number of patients stented before the procedure was 660(11%). Overall stone free rate was 46.4% (2904 patients) and fragmentation rate was 87.3% (5238 patients). ESWL was unsuccessful in 766 (12.7%) cases. The only major complication encountered was rupture of the renal pelvis in 2 cases which required surgical intervention.
