Özet

Because of its relationship with the society, language is defined as a social institution. Language sociology researches the relationship between language and society with a broad research field. When the lexis within a language is examined, it seen that the ones in one area are more than the ones in other areas. If one pays attention on these terms, s/he can easily see that that society has dealt with those terms and subjects in their history and culture very much. The same goes fort he term ocak for Turkish language and culture. This study aims to reveal the meanings of the term ocak has in the society. In this study the meaning of the term was limited in that it was examined in terms of semantics, its meaning in Turkish language, in the dictionaries prepared by Turkish Language Foundation, and in Alewism and Bektashism. The study was conducted first with the dictionaries prepared by Turkish Language Foundation while gathering data. In addition, in the identification of the term's meaning in Alewism,the 63-year-old Turkish Culture and Haci Vektash Veli Research Qarterly's archive was used as well as the related literature. At the end of the research, it is seen that the term ocak has an important place in Turkish language even its meanings in dictionaries. Moreover, it has gained a lot of different meanings in Alewism and Bektashism. The meanings attributed to the term ocak belong to culture and belief more, which is one of the results of the study. Further studies on the term that are broader and more detailed will be useful in terms of culture and lexis.
