Özet

Purpose: In this retrospective study we report our 3 years of experience of the intracarotid methohexital test. Materials and Methods: Fifty-two candidates for epilepsy surgery underwent the intracarond methohexital procedure (IMP; also known as the Wada test) for presurgical evaluation. Results: Language lateralization was distributed as follows: 19 (89.5%) left and 2 (10.5%) right hemisphere speech. In the left temporal lobe epilepsy group, the corresponding values were 28 (84.8%) left and 5 (15.2%) right hemisphere speech. None of the patients who successfully passed the Wada memory test had any significant postsurgical memory deficits. No vascular anomalies were determined during the IMP. Conclusion: Our study highlights the clinical use of the IMP in determining cerebral speech dominance and in predicting post-surgical amnesia, and supports its usefulness in predicting the laterality of seizure focus in candidates for temporal lobectomy in developing countries like Turkey.
