© 2022 IEEE.In this study, the design process, modulation strategy and DC capacitor voltage balancing of a three-phase five-level packed U-cell (PUC5) inverter topology are presented for grid-connected renewable energy applications. The PI controller in stationary reference frame is used as the current controller. The modulation strategy for PUC5 grid-connected inverter is also presented. The proposed system is validated with MATLAB/Simulink simulations results. The obtained results show that the proposed system is capable of injecting three-phase currents, which are balanced and in sinusoidal waveform, to the grid. The THD value of the inverter output current is obtained as 1.63% which meets the international standards. In addition, dynamic response of the system is also tested, and validated.
