Özet

One of the important dimensions in people perception of environment is people values about environment. In this regard, the current study aims to investigate elementary students values about environment. The study was conducted in a survey model. The study group consisted of 110 secondary school students attending two different schools in Ankara, Turkey. Environmental values questionnaire developed by the researchers was used as the data collection tool. Four news pieces from newspapers, about shrinking habitats, deforestation, environmental pollution, and extinction among live generations, were used in the measure. The students were asked to define the environmental issues included in the news and to express required steps to prevent these problems. Students responses were content-analysed and the results were presented in frequencies and percentages. The research results showed that students often had eco-centric environmental values in relation to the solutions to environmental issues and students anthropocentric beliefs were determinant in the environmental issues that they perceived as threats towards safety. Various suggestions were included in the study.
